Also known as the Gulf of California, this marine paradise is a treasure of biodiversity and natural wonders, boasting a rich cultural heritage. The Sea of Cortez is a stage for unique natural phenomena, such as the marine currents that blend warm and cold waters, creating an exceptional environment for underwater life.
Local communities depend on this sea for fishing and sustainable tourism.
This place has a rich history dating back to ancient sailors and indigenous cultures. Archaeological sites along the coasts tell stories of communities that thrived thanks to this source of life.
In 1940, Nobel Prize-winning writer John Steinbeck, along with an American marine biologist, conducted a scientific expedition in the Sea of Cortez. During this expedition, they collected thousands of organisms and plants, which were later named, studied, and cataloged.
In 1974, Jacques-Yves Cousteau explored the Sea of Cortez aboard the Calypso, conducting the first underwater studies and filming that would finally reveal to the international community the richness of Baja's ecosystem.
